FAQs
What herbs will we be working with and learning about?
We will be working with, what I have come to know as, the top 5 herbs for health. They are nettle leaf, oat straw, comfrey leaf, red clover blossom, and linden flower. You will also learn tonic and adaptogen herbs, including astragalus, eleuthero, schisandra, and seaweeds.
Do I need to purchase the herbs separate from the course? How much will they cost?
Yes, you will need to purchase your own herbs. I generally suggest folks buy the 5 infusion herbs by the pound from an herb distributor or farm. The adaptogen herbs and seaweeds can be bought in smaller quantities from a local purveyor or from a bulk herb distributor. Herb prices are always changing, but to buy the main 5 infusion herbs by the pound will cost around $115. The herbs can also be purchased in smaller amounts, if you want to try them out first. 5 pounds of the infusion herbs will last you around 2-3 months if you are drinking the infusions daily. The ultimate goal of this course is to build and cement the habit of drinking a daily herbal infusion, for life. There are 16 servings in a pound, each serving averages $1.44. At less than $1.50 per day, the daily infusion is a very cost effective source of nutrition.
Can I use the infusion herbs if I am taking pharmaceutical drugs?
These herbs are food, not medicine. If you can eat spinach, then you can drink Nettle leaf infusion. If you can eat kale, then you can drink Comfrey leaf infusion. If you can eat beans, then you can drink Red Clover blossom infusion. If you can drink chamomile tea, then you can drink Linden infusion. If you can eat oatmeal, then you can drink oat straw infusion. We will be using these herbs in their whole plant forms and on a rotation, so you will only be drinking 1-2 quarts of each herb per week. These guidelines are not relevant if you are taking these herbs in supplement form or consuming excessive amounts over a long period of time. With herbalism, I believe, safety is about being in proper relationship with the herbs and how you are working with them. You can also check in with your pharmacist, and see what types of plants could interact or interfere with your prescription.
What if I have food allergies? Will I be allergic to these herbs too?
Anyone can be allergic to anything, it’s true. These herbs are not common allergens. The same guidelines as in the previous answer would apply here. We will be drinking one herb at a time. This is important, so that if you do have a reaction that you do not like, you will know which herb is likely the cause. Then, you can not work with that one herb and we can find a proper replacement, together.
Are these herbs OK to drink while I am pregnant and nursing?
In general, these herbs are very nutritious and have benefit a woman who is pregnant or nursing. What you are comfortable doing with your dietary choices while pregnant are totally up to you. I drank these herbal infusions while I was pregnant and nursing and felt nourished in doing so. I have learned from my mentor, Susun Weed, that pregnant women benefit from drinking 2 times the amount of infusions and nursing moms from drinking 3 times the amount of infusions, compared to other folks. I believe that these herbs will nourish both the mother and the baby toward optimum health. All of these herbs are safer to drink then the commonly consumed herb, coffee.
Can my whole family, even kids and grandparents, drink these herbs?
Absolutely!
I drink tea everyday. How is this different?
Tea is a small amount of herb, brewed for a short amount of time. The plants that are used tend to be scented and have nice flavors, like those in the mint family. They can be helpful in changing acute health concerns. They can also just be a nice cup of tea that is pleasant to drink. The nourishing herbal infusions, that we will be making, are a large amount of herb, brewed for a long time. The plants that are used to make them, are plants that are high in nutrients and protein. They need to brew for a long time, so that all of the minerals and nutrients are extracted. They tend to be mild in flavor. A whole quart of nourishing infusion is consumed in one day, for an optimum nutrition boost.
Can I buy the course and give it to family and friends as a gift?
Absolutely. Contact me directly so that we can make sure I have the correct information and email of your lucky gift recipients. A gift card is available to give to them, with information about the class, contact information, and what to expect.
How much time will this course take?
Ultimately, you can put in as little or as much effort and time as you would like. To make the daily herbal infusion, it takes about 5 minutes in the morning and 5 minutes in the evening. Then there is the time it takes to drink the quart of infusion, but I suggest that it replaces other beverages that you drink, so that balances out to no extra time. You will be sent access to 3 videos a month, each running between 30-60 minutes. There will be 2 video conferences per month, that you can watch live or on your own time. These will be 1-2 hours each, depending on the group’s engagement. The motivational emails and community forum time allotment is up to you. So, that totals to between 3.5-7 hours of “class time” per month and 10 additional minutes of self-care per day. If you decide to practice cooking with herbs, as taught in the bonus videos, that can be extra time. However, it would likely balance out, because you would be cooking for yourself anyway! You can do this!
